YOUR Canadian consumer rights
Content from a friend, passing on the message:

Later this week, the government will introduce a bill (as soon as tomorrow) that will change our rights as Canadian consumers. I'll be brief and give you a shot list of things that are about to be outlawed:

1) Unlocking of cell phones
2) Transferring of music from CD (which you own) to your iPod
3) Recording of "time-shifted" television programs
4) Usage of mod chips and memory cards

While the legislators and their generous lobbyists may think that this provision will deal a critical blow to piracy, what they don't understand (or may not care) is that this will also infringe on our fair usage rights as consumers.

If this transgression frightens and offends you, please voice your concerns to your local MP. You can find their contact info here.

If you're feeling lazy, you can sign an online petition here.

Good to know the RIAA and MPAA is strong in the free country of Canada :P

I assume unlocking means being able to use your Verizon plan phone with a Rogers account of something akin to switching your iPhone from AT&T?
That's bull, you do actually own that phone.

The CD thing has long been you own the plastic but not what's on it, you've bought permission to listen to it in certain circumstances :P Intellectual property right can reach into the absurd. I wonder if Apple will say anything.. or not since it would make iTunes and similar the only legal way to put music on your iPod.

I like how the technology to convey, display media is cutting edge but the production industries are still frothing about vhs :p
